Criteria that change everything
Age, weight, neutering, activity, disease, digestion, skin, budget and preferences should be assessed before changing food.
Nutritional needs differ between dogs and cats and change through growth, adulthood and senior years. Kidney, digestive, urinary or endocrine disease can substantially alter the recommendation. A therapeutic diet should not be selected without a diagnosis.
Weight and apartment life
Urban life can reduce activity. Portions, treats and table scraps need adjustment to avoid weight gain.
Measure the daily portion and include treats in the total intake. Weight alone does not tell the whole story: body shape, palpable ribs and muscle condition help track change. Regular weighing allows adjustment before a small difference becomes significant.
Food transition
Changing too quickly can trigger diarrhea or vomiting. A gradual monitored transition is often better.
Introduce new food over several days by gradually mixing the old and new diets unless the veterinarian gives different instructions. Monitor appetite, stool, vomiting, skin and energy during the transition.
When to consult
Loss of appetite, weight loss, excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea or itching require veterinary advice before simply switching food.
A persistent symptom may indicate disease rather than simple food intolerance. Unexplained weight loss, increased thirst, repeated vomiting or refusal to eat requires an examination, particularly in cats and older pets.
