Why prevention remains essential in Morocco

International health organizations describe rabies as serious and preventable. Morocco’s context makes vaccination and owner education especially important.

Rabies is a viral disease transmitted between mammals, mainly through saliva after a bite or scratch. Once clinical signs appear, it is almost always fatal. Dog vaccination and bite prevention therefore protect both animals and people.

Vaccination and boosters

The schedule should be adapted by the veterinarian based on age, vaccine history, lifestyle and travel requirements. Core protection is not just a generic checklist.

Keep the vaccination record legible and current, especially before boarding, travel or a move. When the date of the last vaccine is unknown, the veterinarian assesses the situation instead of assuming protection is still active.

After a bite or scratch

Wash the wound immediately with soap and water, contact a physician for the injured person and call a veterinarian to assess the animal, vaccine status and next steps.

For a person bitten or scratched by a potentially infected animal, WHO recommends thorough washing with soap and water for at least fifteen minutes followed by immediate medical assessment. Veterinary assessment of the animal never replaces human post-exposure care.

Walks, contact with unknown animals, boarding, travel and trips outside the city should be included in the prevention plan.

Avoid handling an unknown animal that appears disoriented, unusually aggressive or paralyzed. After a suspicious contact, record the location, time and description without trying to capture the animal yourself. These details can help professionals assess the exposure.
